Greenteeth by Molly O’Neill – Review

While I have devoured several other books with monstrous protagonists, Greenteeth by Molly O’Neill is the monster-narrated story I never realized I was missing. Similar in spirit to Medusa by Nataly Gruender and Night Hunt by Alexandra Christo, Greenteeth stands out for its dynamic character relationships and its layered, compelling journey toward self-discovery.

The novel follows Jenny Greenteeth, a fearsome water spirit from English folklore, and Temperance Crump, a hedge witch who is discounting of her own power. In an uncharacteristic act of heroism, the reclusive Jenny rescues Temperance from being drowned for witchcraft by the town’s new Pastor – who may not be as holy as he claims. Joined by the goblin Brackus, Jenny and Temperance embark on a quest that takes them across British Isles, confronting the legends of old in a desperate attempt to save their home from an ancient evil.

Although they begin the novel as strangers, Jenny and Temperance’s shared trials solidify their unlikely friendship through mutual respect and love for one another. Each challenge they face proves that despite their obvious differences, they are stronger together than apart. It is through their bond that the characters confront their own self-images, learning to trust each other as they wrestle with past demons to find inner strength and forge onward as a team.

I passed by Greenteeth several times before finally deciding to pick it up. While the unique cover continuously caught my eye, the blurb never quite captured my interest. I’m glad that I finally took the chance, as this novel ended up becoming of my favorite reads of 2025.

Even if fantasy or monsters are not your usual interest, I hope that you give Greenteeth a try. No matter your preferences, there are elements of this novel that will appeal to a wide range of readers. More information about Greenteeth can be found on the publisher’s and author’s websites.

Happy Reading!
